“The jungle has been allowed to reclaim some of the plot, with tropical flora growing around doorways, water features and stairwells.”
Located on a 3,000-square-metre plot of lush coastal jungle and virgin white-sand beach, the setting of Casa Selva alone is magical. The beautifully designed beachfront villa has been seamlessly integrated into its natural surroundings, with sea and jungle views from its pool, palapa and terraces. It’s situated in peaceful and picturesque Punta Pájaros on the Oaxacan-Pacific coast. The nearest airport is just 25 minutes’ away and the renowned surfing resort Puerto Escondido is 30-40 minutes by road.
The Design
Multi-award-winning Venezuelan architect Alberto Calleja is known for his gracefully geometric designs that integrate elegantly into their natural environment. And Casa Selva is an exemplary illustration of this signature style. Raw reinforced concrete structures form the framework of wonderfully open spaces, linked by elevated wooden bridges and soften with slatted panelling. The jungle has been allowed to reclaim some of the plot, too, with tropical flora growing around doorways, water features and stairwells.
At the heart of it, a tall palapa makes up the main living space with a kitchen, lounge and dining area. A woven palm frond roof provides shade while open sides allow gentle breeze and an almost 360-degree appreciation of the scenic coastline and surrounding jungle. Set behind this area are the four bedrooms, of which the master suite overlooks the pool and boasts a fabulous rooftop terrace for even greater views of the property’s spectacular Pacific coast setting.
The Details
When the jungle heat swelters you can just slip easily into the villa’s cooling swimming pool, for a few lengths or just to gaze over the sandy beach from its infinity edge. Sat on a poolside wood-slate sundeck you’ll find some cushioned loungers and, of course, a hammock, to dry off in. Alternatively, you can stroll along the sandy path towards the sea and flop on double sunbeds right on the beach.
Three of the bedrooms have king-sized beds, and one has two queens. Rooms feature one wall which is completely glass, in order to feel connected to the jungle and afford views over the verdant surroundings. All come with air conditioning and ensuite bathrooms with walk-in showers and a full set of quality toiletries. Two of the rooms also have wall-mounted TVs, and wi-fi is available throughout the property.
The house also comes with a fully equipped kitchen, as well as staff on hand to cook breakfast, lunch or dinner on request. Belonging to an acclaimed Mexican filmmaker, of course, the villa also includes an outdoor cinema for movie nights under the stars.
