Like the other nearby Sodi homes, Casa Acuario was designed to tread lightly on the environment and embrace a direct relationship with the surrounding landscape. Natural materials are at the forefront, with sun baked bricks providing the distinctive structures that merge indoor and outdoor living. Natural ventilation techniques draw in a fresh sea breeze and play with the natural light. A vaulted palapa living space with cool concrete underfoot, opens onto a large aquamarine coloured pool, which in turn opens onto this almost private beach.
The interiors, decorated by Década Muebles, feature a centrepiece dining table carved from an ancient hollowed tree trunk, vintage furniture, playful coloured tiles and pops of bright artisan textiles. The four bedrooms are set in the grounds behind the main living structure and feature private terraces and bathrooms with rainfall showers.
Considered one of the world’s top surf spots, Puerto Escondido buzzes with life year-round. Good restaurants are plentiful and there’s always a party to be found. Just in the local area you can explore croc filled mangroves, bioluminescent lagoons, thermal baths, or take a gentle stroll along the beach on horse back as you watch spectacular red hued sunsets. The neighbouring hotels Terrestre and Hotel Escondido both offer tasting menus, as well as a lighter breakfast and beach menu in the daytime. Or choose to stay put and sample some local specialties cooked by Casa Acuario’s attentive house staff.
