Mallorca has long been loved for its beaches and on the largest of the Balearic Islands, there really is a stretch of coast to suit all travellers. Here you find pine forest covered coves with truly turquoise water, rugged rocky inlets backed by the towering Tramuntana mountains and long stretches of fine white sand that call for long days spent horizontal.

Thanks to Mallorca’s large size, it’s best off basing yourself in one area and exploring it in depth rather than trying to see the whole island on one trip. We have spent extensive time in Mallorca and this spotlights our tried and tested best beaches.

There is no one part of Mallorca that wins the prize for best beaches. Instead each section of coast has its own appeal with top beaches in Mallorca spread throughout the island. 

In the north-west of the island where the Tramuntana mountain range meets the Mediterranean Sea you will find dramatic rocky beaches often reached by steep hairpin roads. The north coast near Pollença is known for its long sandy beaches and family-friendly appeal while heading towards the north-east near Arta the landscape evolves into quieter coves backed by pine forests and dunes. 

Meanwhile, in the south-east area around Santanyí, you are spoilt for choice when it comes to small inlets filled with turquoise water and further along towards Palma the coast widens out again with long stretches of sand such as the powdery seven km beach at Es Trenc. 

The restaurant C’as Patro March, perched above this spectacular rocky cove, garnered fame thanks to TV show The Night Manager but this beach has long been one of the most special spots to enjoy a lunch with a view.  On the edge of the Tramuntana mountain range and below the pretty hilltop village of Deià, it’s one of the only coves in this area and naturally gets very crowded in the peak summer season. Head early in the morning to enjoy it peacefully and make sure to reserve ahead for lunch. 

With powdery white sand and clear, shallow water, this long sweeping beach along the island’s south coast is perfect for families. Backed by sand dunes and pine trees and stretching out for nearly seven kilometres, it has a real hideaway island feel yet is still easily accessible. The eastern end is the easiest to reach with car parking at Parking Es Trenc Ses Salines and there’s a good paella lunch option, Es Trenc Restaurant, at this end too. Platja d’es Carbó is also another close-by option for a beach day spread across two locations. 

This sandy bay backed by sand dunes and flanked by scrubby headlands, feels wild and secluded. Located in the north-east of Mallorca in the natural reserve of the Llevant Peninsula, this beach has zero facilities and is a little challenging to get to. Those who make the journey are rewarded with a quieter beach. You can leave your car about one kilometre inland from the beach and walk the last twenty minutes down the sandy track.

Swimming out in this bay and looking back at Tramuntana mountains rising high from behind the beach is pretty spectacular. Backed by the towering mass of Puig Major, Mallorca’s highest peak, this rugged, rocky cove feels distinct to Mallorca’s sandy stretches. There’s a car park close by but the drive is hairy with a number of sharp bends. While there’s no food options on the beach, Restaurant Es Vergeret makes a good stop for a cliffside seafood lunch. 

At this small, sheltered cove, the shallow water is vibrant teal and colourful fishing huts line the pine-covered rocky cliffs. A great place to pitch up for a full day, despite the small stretch of sand there’s lounge chairs and umbrellas to rent and both toilets and a beach bar. Located in the small village of Es Llombards in the south-east of the island, there’s parking on site. 

At the northernmost point of the island, this super skinny stretch of sand sandwiched between dense pine forests and peacock green water juts out into the Mediterranean. Beautiful for swimming, there’s lounge chairs and umbrellas for hire as well as two restaurants along the one kilometre stretch. Traffic restrictions apply in summer so the best option is to park in Port de Pollença and take the shuttle bus. 

Mallorca’s south-west coast often gets a bad name for its proximity to Magaluf but the trio of beaches clustered around Portals Vells are well worth the trip. Sa Platgeta des Portals Vells is the smallest of the three and a lovely compact sandy cove enclosed by limestone cliffs that’s calm for swimming. There’s sunbed rentals in summer and a small car park behind the pine trees. 

It is a well known truth among beach lovers that the hardest to reach spots are always the quietest and subsequently, often the most beautiful. 

Beaches that require a longer walk from the car park often remain the most tranquil. The trade off is often bringing with you food, water and shade.
