6 of the Best of Ibiza's Must-See Views

Sa Talaïa

The highest point in the Pitiüses Islands (that’s Ibiza and Formentera to you and I – named the ‘Pine Islands’ by the Ancient Greeks) is Sa Talaïa, the forested mountain that towers over the southerly village of San Jose. A slinky trail meanders up the 475m peak from behind Destino tapas bar, passing through verdant pines and over rocky escarpments before reaching the magnificent crown, where the 360-degree Balearic views are simply mind-blowing. Those less actively inclined can drive to the top via a camino on the other side. Elevation is easier to come by on the north-western coast of the island, where towering cliffs make for vertiginous sea and sunset views.

Las Puertas del Cielo – the Gates of Heaven – is a much-loved lookout point close to the village of Santa Agnes. Several dramatic hikes plunge down the cliff face to a clutch of far-flung fisherman’s huts, while a pretty café bar at the top serves ice-cold beers to those who’ve made it back. Sunset drumming ceremonies make this a real insiders’ spot. Further north around the coast lies the retro little resort town of Portinatx.

A clifftop jaunt takes hikers away from the beaches to the Far des Moscarter – Portinatx’s emblematic black and white striped lighthouse whose 52-metre tower makes it the tallest in the Balearics.

If you’re tired of Es Vedrà, are you tired of life? Those for whom the pirate tower lookout won’t cut it anymore should head to the ‘eye of Es Vedrà’, a daredevils-only mirador where adventurers (and Instagrammers) can perch inside a jagged rock formation that resembles – you guessed it – an eye.

Time and Space

If a head for heights isn’t your bag, then hotfoot it back to sea level and – specifically – to Cala Lentia, where the monolithic Andrew Rogers sculpture Time and Space has been attracting seekers for years. Commissioned by Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté (the artwork stands close to his Can Soleil villa), the extraordinary monument is made up of thirteen solid basalt columns that weigh 420 tons and were transported by ship from Turkey to Ibiza. The tallest column, at ten meters high, is finished in 23-carat gold to reflect the setting sun on the day of the winter solstice.

Dalt Vila

Impressive as Time and Space is, hauling mega rocks is nothing new on this island. The walls of Dalt Vila, Ibiza’s Unesco-protected Old Town (and the best-preserved walled citadel in the Mediterranean) were built using giant blocks quarried at Cala d’Hort and transported around the island by boat. A sunset scramble through the atmospheric backstreets to the pinnacle of Dalt Vila rewards those who make the effort with spectacular views across the sea to Formentera, Mallorca and beyond.

A life spent on the pretty beach of S’Arenal Petit was always on the cards for Sara and Carlos Tur: their Ibicenca mother was raised in Portinatx and the family finca – estate – extends to the water’s edge.
