“A lofty palm-thatched palapa forms the main living area…which pays homage to the typical dwellings of the region.”
Located in the coastal community of Santa Helena, this elegantly designed luxury beach villa offers a wonderful combination of secluded vacation time and direct access to a scenic stretch of golden sand studded with rock formations. The two-floor home is surrounded by lush native flora and affords superb views from its upper terrace out to the Pacific Ocean. And if you can tear yourself away from the wonderful setting, you’re also just a 45-minute drive from the buzzy beaches of Puerto Escondido and Mazunte.
The Design
One of a small cluster of seven beachfront villas, Casa Laguna is an award-winning holiday home designed by top Mexico City-based BAAQ studio. They built the two-storey property employing a series of concrete slabs and open areas with the aim of ensuring both the feeling of space and privacy. The villa has two main areas, one completely open to take advantage of the glorious ocean views and the other enclosed by a white wall with latticework openings – allowing the cooling sea breeze to filter through.
The villa also has an L-shaped plan, wrapping around the terraces and pool. A lofty palm-thatched palapa forms the main living area, with lounging and dining areas, which pays homage to the typical dwellings of the region. Geometrically patterned tiling complement the polished concrete floors, while slatted wood panelling divide and provide sunlight for the various downstairs spaces.
The Details
A cube-like swimming pool on the upper level provides a welcome spot to cool off while gazing over the shrub canopy and out to sea. Of the six bedrooms, five are located on the lower floor and one on the upper floor. The sixth room is also a TV room that can be converted into two single beds. All rooms open to an ensuite bathroom with a rainfall shower, stone basin and big-bottle toiletries. One of the suites also features a private terrace with access to a beach path.
Private cooks are also available on request to shop for the freshest ingredients at the local markets and cook meals for the guests (for an extra fee). There’s a charcoal-fired barbecue too, perfect for grilling locally caught seafood. A table can also be made up on the beach for waterside dining. As well as direct access to the beach, you have shared access to a beach club complete with a swimming pool and padel court. Free wifi is also available, and yoga classes and massage treatments can be arranged in advance.
